A token board can enhance attention and may be used in conjunction with other customized visual aids and strategies to assist with organization. It functions as a visual reward system that clearly shows an individual what they will earn upon completing a specific task or activity. Token boards support the development of delayed gratification and empower individuals by allowing them to have choice and control over the reward they are working toward.
Vizually Speaking understands that finding time in today’s highly demanding world to create customized visual aids and strategies can be a great challenge. Customized token boards are a visual aid and strategy used for behaviour support with individuals who benefit from clear structure, motivation, and positive reinforcement. They help teach and encourage appropriate behaviours, task completion, and engagement by allowing individuals to earn tokens for demonstrating targeted behaviours or completing specific tasks.

A clear “I’m working for…” token board showing tokens earned toward a goal.
How token boards are used:
-
A target behaviour or task expectation is clearly identified (e.g., completing work, following directions, remaining on task).
-
Each time the individual demonstrates the expected behaviour or completes part of the task, they earn a token (such as a sticker, star, or symbol).
-
Tokens are placed on the token board, providing a visual representation of progress.
-
Once the required number of tokens is earned, the individual exchanges them for a predetermined reinforcer (such as a preferred activity, break, or item).
-
The number of tokens required is adjusted based on the individual’s age, ability, and attention span.
Customized token boards are often paired with customized First-Then boards, task lists, or visual schedules to clarify expectations, increase motivation, and promote independence. They are widely used in educational, therapeutic, and home settings to support visual learning and behaviour regulation.
