A choice board is a visual representation that could include objects, photos, pictures, line drawings or text which can assist an individual to communicate what activity, item or task they would like.
The use of choice boards increases the user’s motivation by providing them with a choice over which activity comes next or what they would like to work towards. It assists an individual to remain focused on an appropriate task or activity, improving communication skills and behaviour. Even though you are the one offering the choices and controlling the options it enables the user a sense of control over their lives and environment, therefore increasing their level of participation. In order for a choice board to be effective, the user must be able to make a choice between a preferred and non-preferred item/activity and, of course, the choice made must be provided.
A choice boards can be used to support:
✓ structure of free time (e.g. after school, weekends, outdoor activities, etc.).
✓ the order of which tasks are to be completed (e.g. chores).
✓ which preferred and non-preferred item/activity they would like to work on.
✓ the choice of the materials being used for an activity
✓ in conjunction with a “First-Then” board or a schedule.
