By using assistive technology and software (e.g. computer, iPad, iPod, androids, E-reader, digital pictures, etc.), speech generating devices (SGD’s) or alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) devices (e.g. Partner 4, Go talk 9+, Tech Talk, DynaVox, etc.) an individual can improve communication at home, school, work, and in the community. It can be used to motivate, enhance academic and social interaction, as well as improve life skills. However, SGD’s may not be the answer for every environment or communication need, as no one device is right for everyone.
Children on the autism spectrum have extensive interest in computers, television, and video and the majority choose to spend more time with electronic media than with all other forms of the play combined. – Shane & Albert, 2008
In today’s world of technology, one can be lost in a sea of choices. The challenge is to find the appropriate assistive technology or a speech generating device to assist an individual to improve in their area of need(s), as well as help them prepare for their future. By considering the goal and objective, as well as the individual’s level of communication, fine motor skills, and cognitive development, one can decide on which technology or device would be best suited for an individual.
Once an individual has successfully demonstrated they understand how to the use a static, non-moving visual aid display (such as a picture on paper), then they can consider trialing another type of visual aid such as a dynamic display device or touch screen display (e.g. I-pod or AAC device).
Some of the benefits of using a static display include but are not limited to:
✓ batteries or plugs are not required
✓ with the proper protection, it is easy to take with you on the go anywhere
✓ less expensive
✓ easy to replace if lost or damaged
