Customized Social Scripts (also known as social narratives or social stories) are short, structured visual stories that support individuals in understanding social interactions, routines, and expectations. They are especially effective for individuals who benefit from clear, predictable, and concrete information.

Customized Social Scripts are written from the individual’s perspective and focus on one specific situation at a time. Each page or section presents one clear concept using simple language paired with supportive visuals such as photos, symbols, or pictures. This approach reduces cognitive overload and increases comprehension.

Customized Social Scripts visually outline what to expect, what is expected of the individual, and appropriate responses in a given setting. They can be presented in a book format, on a single page, digitally, or as a strip-style layout, depending on the individual’s needs and environment.

When creating a Social Script, the content should:

✓ Be written in the present tense, while also preparing the individual for upcoming or future events when appropriate.

✓ Be age-respectful and ability-appropriate, ensuring the language and visuals match the individual’s developmental level, life stage, and communication needs.

✓ Clearly explain who is involved, what will happen, and where it will take place, helping the individual understand the context and expectations.

✓ Describe the perspectives and possible reactions of others, including feelings, to support social understanding and empathy.

✓ Use flexible, non-absolute language such as “usually,” “sometimes,” or “most of the time” to reflect real-life variability and reduce anxiety around rigid expectations.

✓ Focus on one concept or situation at a time, supported by clear visuals (photos, symbols, or pictures) to enhance comprehension and recall.

Social Scripts are most effective when they are personalized, positive, and visually supported, helping individuals feel prepared, confident, and successful across settings.
